Stepped-Up Paper Straw Wreaths

I love paper straw wreaths. They look so festive and fun, are a great holiday décor piece—and I love the cute stripes. So I decided to make one for my family.
I bought an 8" foam wreath at the dollar store, attached a ribbon end to the back of the wreath using hot glue, wrapped the wreath with ribbon, and secured the ribbon to the back of the wreath with more hot glue. Then I adhered a loop of ribbon to the back of the wreath to use as a hanger. Pretty simple, right?  Yep! Until I tried to add the straws. . . .

On my first attempt, I applied hot glue to the ribbon and began laying down straws: long, medium, short, long, medium, short. It seemed like the logical thing to do. I thought the straws would naturally begin to take on the appearance of rays encircling the sun, but instead I wound up with a hot mess—literally! The straws did not look tidy OR cute!

I started over. This time I checked the Internet to see how others managed it, and the solution was simple: first adhere the long straws, then the medium straws, then the short straws. And be sure to apply the glue to the back of the straw, not the ribbon. This time the result was better. I embellished my wreath with stamped images, die cuts, and some ribbon—and I loved it!

Here is the finished wreath, with embellishments made using the Festive Flurry Stamp Set and die cut with the Big Shot and our Festive Flurry Framelits dies. (Can you also imagine that big snowflake as an adorable fairy princess wand?)

This same wreath could be used for Valentine’s Day and Fourth of July.

Now I’m thinking about making a green straw wreath—for Christmas or St. Patrick’s Day—a pastel straw wreath for Easter, an orange or black straw wreath for Halloween—so many possibilities! And I’ll embellish them using Stampin’ Up! products (of course!). Can’t wait!

If you decide to make this wreath, please send us a link to a photo. We’d love to see it!
